When a Good Dog listener wrote to tell me that she was having a tough time finding a breeder to sell her a puppy purely because she and husband work full-time, I was surprised. Not only are breeders reluctant to release puppies to those who will be gone all day, rescue organizations are also turning working people away. Are only people with the funds and inclination to put their pups in daycare supposed to be able to own them now? This sounded like a topic for Good Dog!
On this week’s episode, I discuss this topic with Beverly Ulbrich, president and founder of The Pooch Coach. She agreed that some people are getting carried away and yet there’s a lot to know about keeping your dog safe and happy when you’re gone for long periods of time. We discuss the pros and cons of using crates and exercise pens and how to handle a few common behaviors that dogs engage in when you’re apart.
